ScIeNcE Vocab!
Here is a list of words we have been working with in Science so far!
Pulley- A pulley is a simple machine
that uses grooved wheels and a rope
to raise, lower or move a load.
Fixed Pulley- a pulley that is attached
to a fixed structure above the load being lifted.
Moveable Pulley- Is when there is a pulley
attached to the load being lifted.
Lever- A lever is a stiff bar that rests
on a support called a fulcrum which
lifts or moves loads.
Wheel and Axel- A wheel with a rod,
called an axle, through its center lifts
or moves loads.
Screw- A screw is an inclined plane
wrapped around a pole which holds
things together or lifts materials.
Incline Plane- An inclined plane is a
slanting surface, such as a ramp.
An inclined plane can be used to alter
the effort and distance involved in doing work,
such as lifting loads.
Wedge- A wedge is an object with
at least one slanting side ending in a
sharp edge, which can cut another
material or push two things together.
Fulcrum- A point on which a lever pivots
Load- The object being lifted or moved by a simple machine.
Force- Is a push or pull that can change the way something moves.
Effort- The force needed by another machine or human in order to accomplish lifting or moving a load.
Gears- Two toothed wheels fit together either directly or through a chain or belt so one wheel will turn the other. Some gears may have a screw or a toothed shaft in place of one of the wheels. A gear may also be a combination of toothed wheels that produces a certain speed (such as a bicycle's top gear which makes the bike go fast, and the low gear for slow speed.)Examples: Clock, Automobile, Drill
